Sex: male
Interested In: heterosexual (straight)
Friends and Family: Emilia (wife); Othello (commanding officer);
About Me: villain and master of evil; treacherous; conniving and manipulative; likes drama; loves to create intrigue and turmoil in other people's lives; perceives himself as a know-it-all one-upper.
Iago is filled with resentment, jealousy, and suspicion. He is also obsessed with other people's sex lives. He is resentful of Cassio because Iago was looked over for a promotion. He seems to disrespect women: case in point, Iago believes that his own wife is unfaithful to him, and that women are good only to gratify men's pleasures. He is jealous because he believes that Othello slept with his wife. Consequently, Iago tries to manipulate Othello in believing that his own wife (Desdemona) is cheating on him.
Iago: "So they do nothing, ’tis a venial slip. But if I give my wife a handkerchief—"
Othello: "Then what?"
Iago: "Why then 'tis hers, my lord, and being hers, she may, I think, bestow 't on any man."
The above quote is a great exemplification of appearance vs. reality: Iago is manipulating Othello to believe that his wife Desdemona is cheating on Othello with Cassio, because Iago contends that Desdemona gave away the handkerchief which was a gift from Othello's mother. In fact, she dropped the handkerchief in the garden and lost it.
Iago started rumors about Othello's relationship to Desdemona because he loves people's misfortune. By bringing on others' demise, Iago believes that he can enhance his own power.
Iago is the most vocal racist character, but his racism and judgments are not portrayed positively.
He perceives women as ____, or rather he wants to perceive them that way, just as he does with almost everybody else around him.
